Monday, 29 October 2012 – Free shows and activities in London


Hello there! For Monday, we have collected 21 free events taking place in and around London. With the half-term week on, plenty of them are suitable for children. Here are some ideas:
Collage/Illustration of children and a keyboard

  • Illustration of childrenfree craft sessions (banded entry every 45 minutes, Horniman Museum, 11am-3.30pm, last entry at 2.45pm) celebrating two seasonal festivals – The Day of the Dead and Halloween. Make Scary Halloween Pumpkin Masks and Day of the Dead Skeleton Stick Puppets for scares and fun. For families with children aged 3+
  • free creative workshop where children (aged 5-11 years) learn how to transform their pencil drawings of favourite National Gallery paintings into collaborative performances of glowing light. Their glowing light drawings will be photographed to take home (11am & 2pm)
  • free talk, play, sing and create session (suitable for children aged under 5 years) having as a starting point Rubens’s painting “A View of Het Steen in the Early Morning” (The National Gallery, 11.30am)
  • free tours of Horniman Museum by an impersonator of Mr Horniman who has some fantastic stories to tell. Everyone is welcome, but children must be 3+ and accompanied by an adult (11.30am, 1.15pm and 3pm)
  • free drop-in event (Horniman Museum, 2pm-3.30pm) where you have the opportunity to explore with the assistance of the museums Explainers, thousands of real objects from around the world that the “Hands On Base” Gallery holds (e.g. sari, shark’s teeth, West African thumb piano)
  • free, ticketed, guided tour exploring more about Southbank Centre’s roots, architecture and some memorable moments in its 60-year history (2.30pm). Suitable for ages 6 and over. Children must be accompanied by an adult
  • free lunchtime launching of “Leonardo and the Last Supper”, the new title by bestselling art and history author Ross King. The talk is followed by a book signing (The National Gallery, 1pm)
  • if you are still there at 4pm there is a free, 10-minute talk/introduction to Giordano’s painting “Perseus turning Phineas and his Followers to Stone”
  • free gig with chromatic harmonica player Graham Pike Trio with John Horler (piano) exploring many styles from jazz and fusion to classical, traditional folk to blue (National Theatre, 5.45pm). Find more information about the artist by clicking here
  • the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and the National Gallery ones are a good option too.
