Friday, 17 August 2012 – Free shows and activities in London


Hello there! For Friday we have collected 23 free events taking place in and around London.
Collage/Illustration of children, small houses, an acoustic guitar, a red cress and a keyboard.

Here are some ideas:

  • Illustration of childrenfree craft sessions (11am – 3.30pm, banded entry every 45 minutes – last entry at 2.45pm) related to the collections and gardens of the Horniman Museum (include making your own Olympic torch, paper bag mouse puppets, bug masks, headdresses from Papua New Guinea and crazy carnival spectacles). For families with children aged 3+
  • free outdoor activity where you become a resident of London’s smallest suburb in Theatre Square and you get to develop your house and community. When you leave you can take your home, home. Think something like an analogue version of “SimCity” (National Theatre Square, 12 noon – 7.30pm). Watch this video to get an idea about what is going to happen!
  • a free screening of the film “The Producers” (1968, dir: Mel Brooks, 88 mins) projected on the flytower. The film is a comedy about a theatrical producer and an accountant who attempt to cheat their investors by deliberately producing a flop show on Broadway. Watch the trailer to check if it’s your kind of humour

Illustration of an acoustic guitarIf you prefer music there is a free gig with singer-songwriter Mat Andasun who mixes pop, funk and prog rock with latin music (6pm, National Theatre Square). There is also a free BBC Proms Plus event where experimental composer Alvin Curran and writer and broadcaster Ivan Hewett will introduce you to the world of John Cage (5pm, Royal College of Music). There is also a free ticketed event where by using your headphones you will take part in a curated Music Walk that will lead you to hidden locations and surprising live performance (South Kensington, 6pm-7pm).

For the friends of art there are options including:

  • free Talk and Draw workshop (The National Gallery, 1pm) where inspired by Velázquez’s painting “Christ contemplated by the Christian Soul”, the participants will have the opportunity to draw their own masterpiece. Even materials will be provided for free!
  • a free 10-minute talk on Antonio del Pollaiuolo’s painting “Apollo and Daphne” (The National Gallery, 4pm)
  • two 15-minute introductory talks to painters Henri Rousseau and George Stubbs (The National Gallery, 6pm and 6.20pm respectively)
  • PLUS  the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and  the National Gallery ones; on Fridays there is an extra, late (7pm) tour at The National Gallery; a great way to spend your evening!

There is also a free, ticketed, guided tour exploring more about Southbank Centre’s roots, architecture and some memorable moments in its 60-year history (daily 11.30am & 2.30pm until 9 September 2012).

Wednesday, 1 August 2012 – Free shows and activities in London


Hello there! For Wednesday we have collected 19 free events taking place in and around London. Here are some ideas:

Collage/Illustration of a German flag, a double bass, two violins and children

  • free outdoor recycled games. Come with (or without) your children and play! Watch this video to get an idea of what is going to happen! The video is in Spanish but (apart from the introduction) you don’t have to speak it (we don’t!) to get a good feeling about the idea (National Theatre Square, 2pm-6.30pm)
  • fancy to get messy? Free outdoor performance by Bureau of Silly Ideas campaigning for pie-throwing to be included in the Olympic Games. Support them!  (National Theatre Square, 3pm & 6.30pm)
  • free gig with StrungOut (string quartet, double bass and voice) performing rock and pop songs (National Theatre Square, 1pm). Listen to their music by clicking here
  • two 15-minute introductory talks to painters Henri Rousseau and George Stubbs (The National Gallery, 1pm and 1.20pm respectively)
  • free, ticketed, guided tour exploring more about Southbank Centre’s roots, architecture and some memorable moments in its 60-year history (daily 11.30am & 2.30pm until 9 September 2012)
  • the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and the National Gallery ones (two extra of the latter will be in German: at 12 noon & 2pm) are a good option too.

  • free, lunchtime talk (1pm), on Dürer and his relation with Italy (The National Gallery)
  • the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and the National Gallery ones are a good option too
  • free gig with with sax player from Italy, Tommaso Starace and his quartet who will perform jazz standards and originals (National Theatre, 5.45pm).

  • free, lunchtime talk (1pm), on the anniversary of Gainsborough’s birthday, about the artist’s paintings of his family (The National Gallery)
  • the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and the National Gallery ones are a good option too
  • free gig with with “Three to Tango” trio who will perform traditional tango music from Argentine. (National Theatre, 5.45pm).

Monday, 7 May 2012 – Free shows and activities in London


Good morning! For Monday (bank holiday), we have collected 13 free events taking place in and around London.

Illustration of children and music notesAt Southbank Centre there is the Chorus festival (last day). This year the festival explores “how coming together to sing can change the world”. There are plenty of free performances and activities for you there, e.g.:

  • starting at 10.15am don’t miss the singing warm-up session to get your voice ready for all the other singing activities of the day. Led by Mary King and Joyce Moholoagae.
    If you like singing and perhaps you have been singing with friends or a community choir you will really be blown away by Mary King’s fun but thoughtful practices of warming-up! Don’t miss it; it could be the best experience you will get out of the festival! 
  • free family workshop (The Clore Ballroom, 2.30pm-4pm) where you will have the opportunity to sing with iGospel, the inspirational music project known for its concerts with massed choirs of children (and often adults too). You will learn some motivational music which you then will perform at 4pm with iGospel’s secondary schools choir.
