Friday, 18 May 2012 – Free shows and activities in London


Hello there! For Friday we have collected 18 free events taking place in and around London.

If you are interested in music we have included 4 events:

  • Picture of Phillip Henry & Hannah Martin Duoa free gig by dobro and beatbox harmonica player Phillip Henry and fiddle player/songwriter Hannah Martin performing folk and roots music (Southbank Centre, 1pm)
  • a free gig featuring Azerbaijani singer Gochaq Askarov who sings in the mugham vocal style, the traditional Azeri art music that requires an exceptional musical memory, a fine ear and great improvisational ability (Southbank Centre, 5.30pm)
  • Picture of the folk duet The Askew Sistersa free gig with The Askew Sisters duet (fiddle & melodeon) performing English folk songs (National Theatre, 5.45pm)
  • Illustration of a keyboard and a violinand a free concert with Joo Yeon Sir on violin and Irina Andrievsky on piano performing a programme inspired by the paintings in Room 41 of the National Gallery (6pm).

For the friends of art there are options including:

  • two Talk and Draw workshops (1pm & 6.30pm) where inspired by Caravaggio’s painting “Salome Receives the Head of John the Baptist” and Turner’s “Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway” respectively you will have the opportunity to draw your own masterpiece. Even materials will be provided for free! (The National Gallery)
  • same place at 4pm, a free 10-minute talk on Titian’s painting “Noli me Tangere”
  • PLUS  the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and  the National Gallery ones; on Fridays there is an extra, late (7pm) tour at The National Gallery; a great way to spend your evening!

There is also a free themed tour on the role of ethics in understanding medicine (Wellcome Collection, 2.30pm).

Thursday, 17 May 2012 – Free shows and activities in London


Hello there! For Thursday we have collected 12 free events taking place in and around London. Here are some ideas:

  • at 1pm, there is a free talk by Gill Hart who will explore Turner’s theories and notions of the sublime, from the vast power of the natural elements in “Calais Pier”, to the technological progress of the age, as seen in “Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway” (The National Gallery)
  • the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and the National Gallery ones (various times)
  • at Wellcome Collection, 7pm, there is a free ticketed event where a patient coping with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS, sometimes called ME, or myalgic encephalomyelitis) discusses with her GP. This event is fully booked. Spaces may become available on the day of the event. You can register for the waiting list 90 minutes before the start of the event in Wellcome Collection
  • if you are interested in music there is a free gig with Julian Costello Quartet performing improvisations on saxophone, bass and drums (National Theatre, 5.45pm).

  • two 15-minute introductory talks to painters Corot and Millet (The National Gallery, 1pm and 1.30pm respectively)
  • the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and the National Gallery ones (various times)
  • Illustration of a keyboarda free gig (National Theatre, 5.45pm) with Ray d’Inverno Trio led by pianist Ray d’Inverno. They perform standard jazz pieces.

  • free, lunchtime talk (1pm), on the anniversary of Gainsborough’s birthday, about the artist’s paintings of his family (The National Gallery)
  • the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and the National Gallery ones are a good option too
  • free gig with with “Three to Tango” trio who will perform traditional tango music from Argentine. (National Theatre, 5.45pm).

  • Illustration of childrenfor children there are free workshops (collage competitions and family drawing events) and storytelling sessions at the National Gallery (various times)
  • if you are still there at  4pm, there is a free 10-minute talk/introduction to Seurat’s painting “Bathers at Asnières” (Room 44)

  • at 2.30pm, at Wellcome Collection there will be a guided tour related to medicine and health (historical objects)

Saturday, 12 May 2012 – Free shows and activities in London


Good morning! For Saturday we have collected 19 free events taking place in and around London. Here are some ideas:

  • 'Recommended' label (light green background): it means the event is recommended by London Free Showsstart your day with a free 5K parkrun at 9am taking place in various parks in London and beyond. It’s very refreshing!
  • free guided tour of the “Brains: The Mind as Matter” exhibition at 11.30am (Wellcome Collection). Explore over 150 artefacts including real brains, artworks, manuscripts, artefacts, videos and photography
  • Image of a transparent anatomical modelif you don’t find physical brains of your taste you could join “Medicine Now” gallery free guided tour instead (2.30pm, Wellcome Collection). The topics explored in the gallery are: the body, genomes, malaria, obesity and living with medical science [ Image Credit: Rama Knight/Wellcome Images ]
  • straight after (3pm, same place) there is a free discussion/demonstration between a puppeteer and a neuroscientist who will discuss the techniques of creating carefully crafted movement. This event is fully booked. Spaces may become available on the day of the event. You can register for the waiting list 90 minutes before the start of the event in Wellcome Collection
  • for the lovers of art there is a free talk on Holbein’s painting “The Ambassadors” (1pm, The National Gallery); there is also a 10-minute introduction to Canaletto’s painting “The Stonemason’s Yard” (4pm)
  • the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and the National Gallery ones are a good option too
  • Illustration of two acoustic guitarsif you like music attend a free gig with Angelina & JC Grimshaw performing classic jazz, blues, eastern European folk & gipsy mandolin – classic covers as well as original songs (1pm & 5.45pm, National Theatre).
  • a free screening of the film “Omnibus: Towards Antara” (1987) by Barrie Gavin with music by George Benjamin. The documentary features rehearsal scenes and conversations from the composer himself regarding the making of his pioneering work “Antara”.

And we saved the best for last: a free, open-air concert in Trafalgar Square by London Symphony Orchestra performing works by Igor Stravinsky (Fireworks, The Firebird (suite) and The Rite of Spring). Large screens will be mounted on either side of the stage to allow the audience to witness the concert close up. Starts at 6.30pm.

Friday, 11 May 2012 – Free shows and activities in London


Good morning! For Friday we have collected 18 free events taking place in and around London.

For the friends of art there are options including:

  • a Talk and Draw workshop (1pm) where inspired by Veronese’s painting “The Family of Darius before Alexander” you will have the opportunity to draw your own masterpiece. Even materials will be provided for free! (The National Gallery)
  • same place at 4pm, a free 10-minute talk on Titian’s painting “Noli me Tangere”
  • now, if you are free in the evening you have two options for a good cultural dose at The National Gallery. Between 6pm and 7pm either attend two talks/introductions to late 15th century painters Mantegna (6pm-6.15pm) and Giovanni Bellini (6.30pm-6.45pm) or go to a free concert (6pm-7pm) by Ensemble Chaconne, a period-instrument trio from Boston USA who will perform a programme with works composed by Gainsborough’s friends Carl Friedrich Abel, Felice de Giardini, J.C. Bach, Johann Fischer and Rudolf Straube. In both cases finish the evening with a late (7pm-8pm) tour of The National Gallery.
If you are interested in more music we also include:
  • Illustration of a keyboard and a violina free performance by students of The Royal College of Music Lyrit Milgrim (violin), Morta Grigaliunaite (piano), Pablo Ortiz de Urbina (horn), Leticia Jimenez-Ibanez (violin), Zachary Deak (piano) who will play Maurice Ravel’s Violin Sonata in G and Johannes Brahms’s Horn Trio in E flat, Op.40 (Southbank Centre, 1pm)
  • a free showcase of Goldsmiths students featuring music spanning genres from baroque, Romantic opera and contemporary premieres, to singer-songwriters, electronica and installation. The event will take place on two stages (Purcell Room & Front Room, both at Queen Elizabeth Hall) between 5.30pm and 10.30pm
  • and a free gig with jazz singers Trudy Kerr and Ingrid James performing songs from their recent Cd “Reunion”; Tom Cawley on the piano and Geoff Gascoyne on the bass accompany them (National Theatre, 5.45pm)

Good morning! For Thursday we have collected 12 free events taking place in and around London. Here are some ideas:

  • at 1pm, there is a free talk by Karly Allen who will explore links between paintings of The National Gallery and their more modern reincarnations (The National Gallery)
  • the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and the National Gallery ones (various times); please note that due to industrial action the National Gallery guided tours for today have been CANCELLED!
  • at Wellcome Collection, 3pm, a free ticketed event where Will Giller, Wellcome Collection, will explore the Thames’s impact on public health in London; reserve your free ticket from the Information Point from 1.30pm on the day (i.e. 90 minutes before the start of the event)
  • straight after (4pm – same place) you could join the free guided tour of the “Brains: The Mind as Matter” exhibition. Explore over 150 artefacts including real brains, artworks, manuscripts, artefacts, videos and photography. On this special event your guide will be anatomist Vishy Mahadevan who leads the Anatomy teaching programme at the Royal College of Surgeons of England
  • and at 7pm there is a free ticketed event where Quentin Cooper, broadcaster and presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Material World will discuss with academics, a coach and an athlete what competitive spirit really means. This event is fully booked. Spaces may become available on the day of the event. You can register for the waiting list 90 minutes before the start of the event in Wellcome Collection
  • if you are interested in music there is a free gig with Irene Serra, a vocalist mainly performing jazz, blues, soul & funk (National Theatre, 5.45pm).
