  • Head to the National Gallery and attend a free gallery talk on Frans Hals. It takes place at 1pm and it lasts 15 minutes.
  • Sculptures of the Parthenon have always been one of the main attractions at the British Museum. So, don’t miss the opportunity to attend a free gallery talk on them at 1.15pm.
  • The National Theatre will be hosting Klay D-C, a sensational jazz pianist. The gig is free and takes place at 5.45pm. So, be there in time and enjoy some Latin jazz fusion!

Tuesday is here and there are 24 free shows around London for you to enjoy! Here are some suggestions:

  • Go to the National Gallery and attend the themed tour about Paints and Pigments at 1pm. This tour won’t explore this time the subjects of the paintings, but what they are actually made of; the techniques used to create paints, what materials went into them and how well they survived during the years. Please have in mind that spaces are limited to 40 people on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Head to Tate Britain and attend the Art in Focus talk, focused this month on Hubert von Herkomer’s portrait of Tate founder Sir Henry Tate. The talk takes place at 1.15pm and lasts 15 minutes.
  • At 2pm at the Victoria and Albert Museum there will be a special guided tour for blind and partially-sighted visitors at its major autumn exhibition, Postmodernism. The tour is free, of course, but booking is necessary.
  • The National Theatre will be hosting the singer-pianist, Liam Grundy, performing honky-tonk blues with guitar and bass. The concert starts at 5.45pm and takes place at Concert Pitch (Lyttelton foyer). Don’t miss it!

  • Learn about another aspect of faith; about its architectural. There is a special intercultural tour at the Victoria and Albert Museum which will be looking at the key features of the architecture of basilica and mosque buildings through museum objects. It is taking place at 1pm and it is free of charge, of course.
  • If you are short of time, but still want to have an idea of the masterpieces at the National Gallery, then why not attend the free guided tour at 2.30pm? Enjoy!
  • Learn about Puvis de Chavannes’s ‘Death and the Maidens’ with a free gallery talk at the National Gallery at 4pm.

  • There are Art Trolley Weekend sessions for you and your child at Tate Britain.  Children are encouraged to imagine and explore with paper-based activities to use in the galleries.  It starts at 10am and no bookings are taken. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Let your children fly on a Magic Carpet Storytelling session at the National Gallery. There are two sessions taking place-at 10.30am and 11.30am-and they are suitable for under 5s.
  • Learn about Raphael’s ‘Madonna of the Pinks’. There is a free gallery talk at the National Gallery at 4pm.

It is Saturday, you have lots of free time and don’t know what to do? There are 34 free shows in London today for you to enjoy!  Here are some suggestions:

  • There are Art Trolley Weekend sessions for you and your child at Tate Britain.  Children are encouraged to imagine and explore with paper-based activities to use in the galleries.  It starts at 10am and no bookings are taken. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Celebrate the Big Draw Day at the British Museum with the Teddy Bear’s Picnic, in honour of Grayson Perry’s teddy bear and god of his imaginary world. There will be workshops and talks from 11am to 4pm and everyone is encouraged to take part. So, let your imagination free and enjoy!
  • As part of the Big Draw Day, there will be a special talk on Michelangelo’s ‘Epifania’ cartoon at the British Museum.  The talk is free of course and is taking place at 1.15pm.
  • Today there 4 BSL-tours taking place at the National Gallery, commenting on great paintings. At 11am it will be on ‘The Vendramin Family’ by Titian, at 11.15am on  ’The Family of Darius before Alexander’ by Veronese, at 1pm on ’An Allegory of Prudence’ by Titian and at 1.15pm on ’The Origin of the Milky Way’ by Tintoretto. They all last 10 minutes and no booking is required.
  • Head to the National Theatre at 5.45pm and enjoy the Fribo band playing music influenced by Scandinavian and Celtic folk.

Thursday is here and there are 22 free shows around London for you to enjoy! Here are some suggestions:

  • Cartoons during the Renaissance were full-size preparatory drawings used to help create paintings. Without them amazing works might have not been completed and nowadays are much appreciated. This talk at 1pm will examine the use of them during the Renaissance, followed by a special private viewing of the Carracci Farnese Gallery Cartoons at  2-2.15pm (repeated 2.30-2.45pm). Tickets will be provided at the Sainsbury Wing Theatre before the talk, with spaces limited to 20 people per viewing. Don’t miss it!
  • Are you wondering what the trends might be in modern ceramics? Then attend a talk  at the Victoria and Albert Museum at 1pm, where some of the V&A’s extensive collection of modern and contemporary ceramics will be explored and special attention will be paid to how function and decoration make us see things differently.
  • Who made the swimming reindeer? If you are curious to find out, then head to the British Museum at 1.15pm and attend a free gallery talk solving out this mystery.
  • Also today is your last chance to apply for free tickets for Glen Campbell‘s BBC concert in London (taking place on 19 October) and “Friday Night is Music Night” shows (on 21 October, 4 and 25 November). Don’t leave it for later! The deadline for the former is 5.20pm (!) and for the latter 10pm. Good luck with your application(s)!

  • Head to the Wellcome Collection and join an interesting conversation about whether breastfeeding is best or not. A paediatrician from the UCL Institute of Child Health will be sharing her views and the results of her research investigating the links between infant nutrition and health in later life. The talk is free of course and takes place at 1pm (first come, first seated).
  • Attend a fascinating Sculpt and Draw event at the National Gallery, taking inspiration from ‘Samson and Delilah’ by Rubens. Start by moulding a muscled Samson in plasticine clay, then take it a step further drawing from your own sculpture. The workshop starts at 1pm and all materials are provided. Please, note that spaces are limited to 40 people on a first-come, first-served basis. So, be there in time.
  • Frank Lloyd Wright has undeniably been one of the most influential architects. There will be a talk today at the Victoria and Albert Museum at 1pm about his work and most remarkable designs, focused on works at the Museum’s Wright Collection. Don’t miss it!
  • The National Theatre will be hosting Sumudu, a sensational singer/songwriter who will be performing songs from her debut album. The concert is free and takes place at 5.45pm. Enjoy!

  • Why not add some music to your lunchbreak and attend the Purcell School Series at Saint Martin-in-the-Fields at 1pm? Pupils from the Purcell Scholl will be playing pieces by Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Brahms. A suggested donation of £3.50 is taken at the end of the concert which goes towards the work of St Martin’s.
  • Join the Tour and Draw event at the National Gallery! You will be taken a tour through the gallery and stop off at three paintings to take inspiration from them. Afterwards you will be able to make your own response by making a drawing with the materials provided. The activity starts at 1pm and spaces are limited to 40 people on a first-come, first-served basis. So, be there in time!

  • Mega mummy animation workshop at the British Museum! Use digital video cameras and stop-motion software to create a giant animation of the mummification process. There are two sessions-at 11am and 2pm-each on lasting 2 hours. They are suitable for ages 7+ and booking is advised.
