Sunday, 27 May 2012 – Free shows and activities in London

Hello! For Sunday, we have collected 16 free events taking place in and around London. Here are some ideas:

  • Illustration of childrenfor children there are free workshops (collage competitions and family drawing events) and storytelling sessions at the National Gallery (various times)
  • if you are still there at  4pm, there is a free 10-minute talk/introduction to Seurat’s painting “Bathers at Asnières” (Room 44)

  • at 2.30pm, at Wellcome Collection there will be a guided tour related to medicine and health (historical objects)
  • the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and the National Gallery ones are a good option too.

If you prefer free live music Klezmania Klezmer band (fiddle, piano and double bass) will be playing Jewish, Gipsy and Eastern European folk music (1pm).

Saturday, 26 May 2012 – Free shows and activities in London

Hello there! For Saturday we have collected 18 free events taking place in and around London. Here are some ideas:

  • 'Recommended' label (light green background): it means the event is recommended by London Free Showsstart your day with a free 5K parkrun at 9am taking place in various parks in London and beyond. It’s very refreshing!
  • free guided tour of the “Brains: The Mind as Matter” exhibition at 11.30am (Wellcome Collection). Explore over 150 artefacts including real brains, artworks, manuscripts, artefacts, videos and photography
  • Image of a transparent anatomical modelif you don’t find physical brains of your taste you could join “Medicine Now” gallery free guided tour instead (2.30pm, Wellcome Collection). The topics explored in the gallery are: the body, genomes, malaria, obesity and living with medical science [ Image Credit: Rama Knight/Wellcome Images ]
  • straight after (3pm, same place) there is a free ticketed event where it will be uncovered how it is possible to create the illusion of lifelike movement with the stop motion animation technique. The event will include a film screening of “Tchaikovsky” (2011) and a discussion between director Barry Purves and neuroscientist James Kilner. This event is fully booked. Spaces may become available on the day of the event. You can register for the waiting list 90 minutes before the start of the event in Wellcome Collection

Friday, 25 May 2012 – Free shows and activities in London

Good morning! For Friday we have collected 15 free events taking place in and around London.

If you are interested in music we have included 2 events:

  • Illustration of a vintage microphonea free gig with singer Wendy Bevan performing jazz standards (National Theatre, 5.45pm)
  • a free gig with nine-piece jazz orchestra performing new music by award-winning composer and bassist Yuriy Galkin (Southbank Centre, 5.30pm).

For the friends of art there are options including:

  • a Talk and Create workshops (1pm) where inspired by Chelsea Flower Show week, and the collection of Dutch flower paintings of The National Gallery you will have the opportunity to create a unique fabric bloom. Sculptor Sarah Tombs will provide you with advice to get you started. Even materials will be provided for free! (The National Gallery, 1pm)
  • same place at 4pm, a free 10-minute talk on Titian’s painting “Noli me Tangere”
  • PLUS  the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and  the National Gallery ones; on Fridays there is an extra, late (7pm) tour at The National Gallery; a great way to spend your evening!

There is also a free guided tour focusing on the work of the Wellcome Trust. Contemporary and historical artworks on display are examined and the attendees have the chance to examine parts of Wellcome Collection not usually seen by the average gallery visitor (Wellcome Collection, 1pm).

Thursday, 24 May 2012 – Free shows and activities in London

Hello there! For Thursday we have collected 13 free events taking place in and around London. Here are some ideas:

  • at 1pm, there is a free talk by Betsy Wieseman who will discuss how the advancements in botany and horticulture in Netherlands during the late 16th and early 17th centuries gave rise to naturalistic flower paintings (The National Gallery)
  • the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and the National Gallery ones (various times)
  • at Wellcome Collection, 3pm, there is a free themed tour of the “Brains: The Mind as Matter” exhibition. On this special event your guide will be Dr Henrietta Bowden-Jones, a medical doctor specialising in addiction psychiatry
  • same place at 7pm, there is a free ticketed event where a group of people closely involved with the aftermath of thalidomide and its history will discuss about the social, emotional and medical aspects of the Thalidomide story. The event will also include the screening of extracts from related films
  • Illustration of a violinif you are interested in music there is a free gig with Zenoria Trio (2 violins & a double bass) performing Tango, Classical, Folk and Jazz among other styles (National Theatre, 5.45pm).

  • two 15-minute introductory talks to painters Turner and Claude (The National Gallery, 1pm and 1.30pm respectively)
  • the daily free guided tours of the Victoria and Albert Museum (highly recommended) and the National Gallery ones (various times)
  • free eat-while-you-listen talk on some of the effects of radiation at high and low doses to human health. By Professor Gerry A Thomas, Chair in Molecular Pathology, Imperial College, London (Wellcome Collection, 1pm)
