Summer is here and  some  may be heading away from their beloved London for holidays, but for those of you staying or visiting London, there are 26 free events taking place, where you can have a great time! So, here are some suggestions:

  • Learn about what happened to the altarpiece in the Victorian era and the interpretations of it in the work of artists, such as Burne-Jones, Rossetti and others. This talk is free and is taking place at The National Gallery at 1pm.                
  • Fancy visiting a ceramics studio and talk with talented people from this field? Then, join students from the University of Wolverhampton discussing their work at the Victoria and Albert Museum at 1pm.
  • Do you think that science  and art can meet? If you would like to find out, there is a free lecture at the British Museum at 1.15pm, where they will be investigating pigments in art and archaeology.

  • Explore aspects of Tang Dynasty China from a different path this time: learn about life and rituals during that period as seen through ceramics. This very interesting talk is free and is taking place at The British Museum at 1.15pm.
  • Learn about photograph expert firm Bedford Lemere and Co. Images and discover the impact their work in 1860s had on our image of late Victorian and Edwardian architecture. This talk is free and is going to be delivered at 1.15pm at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

  • Join an Italian Grand Tour at the National Gallery and explore paintings from Venice, Rome and Bologna. The tour is free, but places are limited to 40 people on a first-come, first-served basis.Dance Around the World at the Victoria and Albert Museum! As part of the Refugee Week 2011 at the V&A there will be traditional dances from refugees’ countries at the John Madejski Garden at 1pm. A perfect way to enjoy your lunch!
  • Have a look how the 19thcentury London looked like through drawings, rare prints, guidebooks and maps from the RIBA and V&A collections. Attend the free talk at the Victoria and Albert Museum at 1pm.

Hello, everyone! Got free time but don’t know what to do? Think that it would be expensive to visit new places, exhibitions or attend performances? We are here to tell you that you can enjoy several events in London for free! Here are 24 to choose from and some suggestions:

  • Curious to know why the pomegranate fruit is featured on many sacred and secular objects in traditions around the world? Then attend the talk taking place at the Victoria and Albert Museum at 1pm.

We have 36 free events today for you to choose from! Here are our suggestions:

  • Get your children on the Magic Carpet at the National Gallery to free interactive story sessions!! There are two sessions, at 10.30am and 11.30am, each lasting 30 minutes, and they are suitable for children between 2 and 5 years old. Places are limited and are allocated on arrival and children must be accompanied to all events.
  • What’s your perspective? Free drawing sessions at the National Gallery for 5 to 11-year-olds. Have your children taking inspiration from the Gallery collection and be guided to their own creative point of view. There will be two sessions, at 11am and 2pm, each lasting 1hour and 20 minutes. Children must be accompanied. There is no need to book, but places are limited and allocated on arrival. Families can feel free to drop in and out.
  • Dance Around the World at the Victoria and Albert Museum! As part of the Refugee Week 2011 at the V&A there will be traditional dances from refugees’ countries at the John Madejski Garden at 1pm. A perfect way to enjoy your lunch!
  • Join curator Ramona Riedzewski on a talk on Ernst Stern, an Émigré Stage Designer. It is free and part of the Refugee Week 2011 at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The talk will explore the work of Stern as one of the leading stage designers of his time.

We have more or less 48 free events today (Saturday) for you to choose from! Here are our suggestions:

  • Southbank Centre celebrates the British light music with events taking place during the Light Fantastic Weekend. There are various gigs and discussions to attend. Don’t miss tonight’s gig at 10pm on the Clore Ballroom at the Royal Festival Hall with singer Claire Martin.
  • Would you believe it? Make-up workshop at the British Museum!!! Get inspired by ancient Egyptian beauty work and create your own contemporary make-up look. There are two sessions, at 11am and 2.30pm, each lasting for 2 hours and they are suitable for 13-18 year olds. Booking is required!
  • Special event at the National Gallery for blind and partially-sighted visitors. There will be a description session on Renoir’s painting ‘The Umbrellas’. The admission is free, of course, but advance booking is recommended in order to guarantee a place (Tel: 020 7747 5855 Email: education@ng-london.org.uk).
  • Don’t miss the chance to see the Victoria and Albert Museum’s collections from a different perspective. As part of the Refugee Week 2011 at the V&A, there will be a refugee from Afghanistan, Darfur, Iraq and a Holocaust survivor from Poland who will take you around the museum and show objects related to their personal stories. Each talk starts at 11.30am, 1pm, 2.30pm and 4pm respectively.

Here are our suggestions for today:

  • Why not spend your time in a creative way and make a seascape collage at the National Gallery? It is a Talk and Create event, staring at 1pm. It is free, but places are limited to 40 people on a first-come, first-served basis. So, make sure you arrive on time, in order not to miss it!
  • Take advantage of your lunchtime break and enjoy a concert at Saint Martin-in-the-Fields! As part of the Pianists of the World Series, the uprising pianist Amit Yahav (Israel) will be playing pieces by Tal Liszt. The concert is free and a suggested donation of £3.50 is taken at the end of it which goes towards the work of St Martin’s.
  • Express yourself at the Poetry workshop led by Michael Laskey at the National Gallery of Art. Get inspired by ‘A Woman bathing in a Stream (Hendrickje Stoffels?)’ by Rembrandt and write your own poetry!! It starts at 6.30pm, but places are limited to 40 people, on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • It is Refugee Week 2011 at the Victoria and Albert Museum and as part of it, there will be Asylum Dialogues, a performance of music and theatre, where the relationship between British people and asylum seekers will be discussed. It starts at 7pm.

Here are our suggestions for today:

  • Why not take advantage of your lunchtime break and learn about the entry of Bellini  into the 16th century at The National Gallery? Explore his later paintings and his art towards the end of his life with a free talk at 1pm.
  • What was the art and leadership among American Indians? If you are interested in it, join Max Carocci on a free gallery talk at The British Museum at 1.15pm.
  • Join Professor Maria Wyke (UCL Department of Greek and Latin) and learn about Greek sculpture and the modern male body. She will be discussing Greek sculptures and the ways in which their ideal representations of the male body have shaped the 20th century “ideal man”, particularly in terms of their display of power and sexuality. The lecture is free, taking place at 1.15pm and booking is advised.
  • Don’t miss the chance to meet curators from the National Museum of Afghanistan, Kabul at The British Museum at 2pm and learn about the former Museum’s collections, challenges and their plans for the future.

Some of our favourite free events that you could enjoy in London today include:

  • Don’t have a clue about Renaissance and Rococo? Don’t worry!! Learn everything about them in three easy steps at the British Museum. A free gallery talk, starting at 1.15pm and given by Hilary Williams.
  • Join Laurie Duggan at the British Museum and enjoy some Australian reading! He will read a selection of his poetry. Don’t miss it; it starts at 1.15pm.
  • Learn about the art of collecting at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Join Tim Schroeder, former curator of the Gilbert collection and explore the museum’s outstanding collection of gold, silver, mosaics, gold boxes and enamel portrait miniatures. The free talk starts at 1.15pm.

  • Make an Italian Grand Tour and let to know paintings from Siena, Florence and Milan at The National Gallery. A great chance to have a closer look to the permanent collection.
